Environmental
Policy
Spring 2006

Welcome to ES211. I am really looking forward to this class this year. In addition to using some of the same material from previous years, Diane Munroe and I are going to add three new elements this spring:
- In order to further build our understanding of the environmental policy cycle in the United States, we are going to use for the first time Environmental Choices, a book that explores 'policy responses to green demands.' The book includes a model for the complicated process of policymaking that I think will teach us a lot.
- We are going to spend a fair amount of time studying current policy responses to the world's climate crisis. In doing so, we will build on a new book that I am editing: Ignition: The Growing Movement to Stop Global Warming.
- Under Diane's leadership, we have five wonderful service-learning projects lined up. Each of these projects, which address challenges related to climate change and renewable energy at different scales, has a lot of long-term potential. And as we pursue these projects, I hope that we will be loosely collaborating with Middlebury's own Sunday Night Group.
We look forward to getting started. Throughout the semester, feel free to contact me at the coordinates listed on the 'professor' page. Meanwhile, Diane's coordinate's can be found here. Good luck in this course.
